Testing the New Gunsan Pattern

B,wear posted about a new pattern coming: Gunsan. I was fortunate enough to be able to test the pattern. It’s a lovely pattern!

It’s a darted one-piece cup. I was so excited to try this new pattern.

I made a decision before starting this bra. I LOVE to test patterns. I really do. But honestly, with all the alterations I need, it’s not fair for me to sew it for me. It’s not fair to take the pattern and make all the changes, and then give feedback.

So, I decided I would test the pattern as it is, and make it in my size – without any changes. Then I could gift it to my friend who’d had surgery last year. We’re the same size, but she doesn’t need the alterations for Omega. It was a win-win this way.

I used the Patricia bra kit from B,Wear.  This is such a pretty kit.

Here’s my first make of the new Gunsan pattern. Another decision I made before starting was to not mirror the lace. (Shh. Don’t tell my friend. She doesn’t know about these things.)

Rather than trying to mirror, I made sure the larger motifs along the upper edge were in the same places and it gives a symmetrical look to the bra still.

My friend loves it. She was sending photos of her new bra to her mom and sister. This really is a lovely pattern. It’s nice to find a darted cup in a larger size.

And lastly, just so you can see how very delicate and sheer this lace is, I’ve laid it on my sewing desk for a photo too.      Stay tuned. There’s more to share on the Gunsan pattern.

Happy creating!

  1. Pretty bra. I’m having trouble seeing where the second cup piece is. Only the main, darted piece is visible to me.

I’ve done a fair amount of pattern testing for bras and they are always so different. Some will just send the pattern pieces, leaving you to figure out everything. Others will send a brief outline of directions. My favourite is the designers who send the complete instructions, with illustrations, just as it would be if you had purchased the pattern. After all, how comprehensive the instructions are is an important part of evaluating the pattern and should be part of the testing process.

    1. Thank you Sandy. And thank you for catching my mistake. I’ll correct that right away. It is darted, but not two cup pieces. Yes it is good to evaluate the whole pattern with the instructions included as well. A lot of my testing with House Morrighan was with the pattern instructions, much more than with the pattern itself. I love pattern testing, don’t you?

      1. I do, though there are a few designers that I’ve not had good luck with in terms of fitting. Which is kind of unusual because I’m an easy fit. I almost never have to make changes to the pattern. There is one pattern in particular that everyone seems to love, but I’ve never been able to get it to fit me. I made three, including a custom drafted version, when they updated their pattern. Oh well, can’t have everything, right?

        1. Sandy, I think it all depends on our own shape and the shape of the block we’re testing. Some patterns fit me so well with only a few adjustments, and other take so many adjustments and I’m never happy with the fit still. I envy you being an easy fit!

  2. It looks like the pattern has only one dart in larger sizes, which will probably not be a very good fit for very projected people. I made the Hari Ito Mesange pattern once and it was horribly shallow. The Booby Traps Dart Bra Voluptuous and the Lilypad Lamina both have two darts, but the patterns both have other problems. Oh well, maybe one day I’ll be able to draft my own 2-darted bra pattern, and it’ll be a plunge.

That said, it is a beautiful bra and the un-mirrored lace adds some interest to it. Your friend had better be grateful for having you in her life!

    1. May, you’re right. There is only the one dart. And darted bras are harder for larger sizes. I made a 5.50 BCD That’s a 36G and it fit her quite well. With all the Omega adjustments I need, I didn’t want to test the pattern on me. My friend was thrilled to get a new bra.
